Academic interests

Dr. Frédéric Coutant, Associate Professor of Immunology at the Faculty of Medicine Lyon-Est, leads the Immunogenomics and Inflammation research team (Hospices Civils of Lyon – Eurobio scientifics) based at Lyon’s Hôpital Edouard Herriot. He is affiliated to the UMR INSERM U1059 (LBTO Team) since 2024. He also works within the Immunology Department of Lyon-Sud Hospital, where he is specialized in the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases.

His research focuses on understanding the pathogenesis of autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases, with particular emphasis on rheumatoid arthritis and myositis. By employing an optimized technology for developing human monoclonal antibodies, his work aims to decipher the role of autoantibodies in these diseases.

Teaching

Head of Immunology Teaching for the first cycle of Medical Studies (DFGSM2), Faculty of Medicine Lyon-Est

Member of the local coordination team for the Internal Medicine and Clinical Immunology Residency Program

Immunology Lecturer : DFGSM2, DFASM1 (Faculty of Medicine Lyon-Est), Master of Immunology (UCBL)

Background

  • 2004: PhD thesis, Immunology (highest distinction), Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon, France.

Position

  • Nov 2017-Present: Associate Professor of Immunology, Autoimmunity Department (CHU Lyon-Sud) – Immunogenomic & Inflammation team (Hôpital Edouard Herriot) – Faculty of Medicine Lyon-Est. Engaged in translational research focusing on the production of human monoclonal autoantibodies and exploration of their pathogenic role in autoimmune diseases.
  • 2013-2017: Medical resident, CHU Gabriel Montpied – Clermont Ferrand.
  • 2009-2013: Medical student, Assistance Publique des Hôpitaux de Paris – Faculté de médecine Paris V.
  • 2006-2010: Postdoctoral fellow, Institut Pasteur, Paris, Unit Retrovirus & HIV. Conducted research on the development of vaccines based on lentiviral vectors (Malaria, West Nile Virus, HIV) and lentiviral vectors to treat X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency.
  • 2005-2006: Postdoctoral fellow, Institut Gustave Roussy, Villejuif, CNRS, UMR-8125. Conducted research on chemotherapy-induced immunogenicity of dying tumor cells.
  • 2001-2004: PhD student, Ecole Normale Supérieure, Lyon, INSERM U503. Identified a new pathway modulating the immune response based on the sensing of low-density lipoproteins by dendritic cells.
